Discussion – What is cold calling and should I be doing it with Jim Galiano? – [4:37]
With our discussion guest: Jim Galiano
This is discussion we invite marketing expert Jim Galiano on so that he can tell you about… erm… cats, no… marketing!
I don’t know you, but I know for an absolute fact that I’m hopeless at marketing. I’m not very good at it and it find it really hard to do, or to get excited about. It’s something that I’ve struggled with for a long time.
I’m lucky in that I have enough work (right now) to keep me going and it comes my way largely through word of mouth. Because I’m a study in mediocrity, this is fine by me; I have not needed to market too much to keep my head above the water. But I’m hoping that you’re not as satisfied with mediocre, as I am – you’re a get-up-and-got type aren’t you? You want more out of life than I do? Well guess what, you’re going to have to market yourself in order to get, because you can be sure that competitors will.
Cold calling is certainly something that you can do. You can talk to complete strangers and work the odds, because, chances are that after 2,417 calls, someone will speak to you. Or you could take the advice of someone like Jim and learn some of the ways that you can increase your odds of getting into that first all-important chat.
Jim’s been doing this kind of marketing on and off for years and so he really know what he’s on about. He is able to make it a success through constant iterations of his processes.
One of the things that I struggle with is that moment when the phone is picked up. What do I say? How do I keep the conversation going? How do I make it sound like I really, really am not going to be wasting your time? All of things takes thought and practice, doing it many times until you become comfortable with your voice, your offer, and your authority.
Do you need to stick to a script or work completely off the cuff all the time? Do you even need to pick up the phone? Jim thinks ‘no’, as he wraps email marketing up as cold calling too. He even works with bespoke videos so that he is able to tailor his offering right at the person who is going to making the decisions.
I learned a lot during the making of this podcast, and I hope that you will too. Bookmark this one if you need some help with your WordPress website business because it’s sure to offer you something in the days, weeks and months to come.
Great insights Jim, thanks for coming on!
