WP Builds Newsletter #15 – Massive Gutenberg tutorials, Yoast ruins SEO and the end of tablets

This weeks WordPress news – Covering The Week Commencing 28th May 2018:

WordPress.org Privacy Policy Updates
“The WordPress.org privacy policy has been updated, hurray! While we weren’t able to remove all the long sentences, we hope you find the revisions make it easier to understand: how we collect and use data, how long the data we collect is retained, and how you can request a copy of the data you’ve shared with us…” It certainly read more easily and will likely keep our GDPR overlords happy!

WordCamp US 2018 is Accepting Speaker Proposals Until July 1st
“WordCamp US has announced it is accepting speaker proposals until July 1st, 11:59p.m. CDT. The event takes place December 7-9, 2018, in Nashville, TN. Learning Gutenberg: Series Introduction
This is a gigantic series of seven tutorials which explain how to develop for Gutenberg. It’s the best series of tutorials that I’ve seen thus far and the scope is enormous. It’s certainly a developer topic and you’ll need to have a basic knowledge of WordPress actions, filters and template tags, but it’s certainly worth checking out.

Yoast SEO Plugin 7.0 Bug Causes Ranking Drops
Ooops. “A major update to Yoast SEO fixes a bug that affected the rankings of certain websites. The founder of Yoast, Joost de Valk, personally offered an apology to victims of the error that may have suffered “Panda-like problems” and lost search rankings as a consequence…”

The Ultimate Guide to WordPress Speed Optimization
Much like the Gutenberg tutorial series mentioned above, this WordPress speed optimisation article is super long and detailed. Much of it you might already know, but know doubt, some of it will be new to you and there’s bound to be a few things that you missed!

The Small-Business WordPress Developer Code of Honor
Such an interesting idea. A code of honour for people building WordPress websites for their clients. Whilst I don’t agree with all the specifics of the ‘code of honour’ (UK spelling), I think that the principle is a good one. Is this something that you can see implementing on your business?

Non WordPress, but useful anyway…

Google quits selling tablets
“Google has quietly crept out of the tablet business, removing the “tablets” heading from its Android page. Perhaps it hoped no one would notice on a Friday and by Monday it would be old news, but Android Police caught them in the act. It was there yesterday, but it’s gone today…”

I wrote a negative Yelp review — and it made my life a nightmare
Yelp reviewers, beware. A Manhattan woman who gave one-star reviews on Yelp and ZocDoc to a Kips Bay gynecologist has spent nearly $20,000 defending herself against a defamation suit filed by the physician, according to her and court papers. And the litigation has only just started…”

Teens dump Facebook for YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat
“A Pew survey of teens and the ways they use technology finds that kids have largely ditched Facebook for the visually stimulating alternatives of Snapchat, YouTube and Instagram. Nearly half said they’re online “almost constantly,” which will probably be used as a source of FUD, but really is just fine. Even teens, bless their honest little hearts, have doubts about whether social media is good or evil…”
